Dynamic Dog assessments
The way we behave is inextricably linked to the way we feel. The same is true for our dogs.
Research suggests that up to 80% of pet behavior cases have an underlying pain component. Dogs who are sore, stiff, painful, uncomfortable, itchy, queasy, or otherwise ‘ouchie’ are more likely to display reactive, aggressive, overaroused, compulsive, and other maladaptive behaviors.
Trying to train away behaviors that are exacerbated by, or a direct result of a painful condition, is not only ineffective but inhumane.
A Dynamic Dog assessment may be just what you need.
As a Dynamic Dog practitioner, I am able to assess your dog’s conformation, posture, gait, and behavior to spot potential signs of pain. I can provide you and your dog’s veterinarian with evidence to support further diagnostics and treatment.
Together, we can work to resolve a variety of complex behavior challenges, by addressing underlying causes and helping your dog feel better.
If we aren’t feeling well, we can take some ibuprofen, rearrange our schedules, tell our friends/family that we need some space, call the doctor and explain exactly where it hurts, etc. Our dogs cannot advocate for themselves in the same ways. They learn how to compensate for pain by adjusting their posture, gait, activities, and affect.
They may also try to tell us that something isn’t right, but we miss it. The signs can be subtle to the untrained eye. More obvious signs like limping or yelping do not always occur.
Or maybe you do notice that something is definitely off, whether it’s a funny movement or quirk, or an intense behavior with unclear origins. You’ve been working on training for a long time but things aren’t improving. You’ve tried taking your dog to the vet, but they’re given the “all clear”.
But still, something doesn’t seem right… training isn’t progressing the way it should… your dog struggles in daily life… and you’re feeling lost.
Some behavior challenges that may be related to underlying pain or discomfort:
Difficulty resting or settling
Aggression (growling, lunging, barking, biting)
Resource guarding
Fear/avoidance of people/dogs
General environmental sensitivity
Noise phobias
Pulling on leash
Stalling or “stubborn” behavior on walks
Mouthing, jumping, barking, and other high arousal behaviors
Potty training regressions
Handling sensitivity, avoidance of harness
Avoidance or discomfort in the car
The Dynamic Dog process:
-
Step one: Deep Dive
A 60-90 minute consultation (held via Zoom, or in person, depending on your location) where I learn as much as I possibly can about your dog. What is in their environment, their routine, their behavior, that can give us clues? Even the most seemingly mundane questions can reveal important details.
-
Step two: Data collection
I will send you off on a scavenger hunt to collect the necessary photos and videos for my analysis. You will need to follow my instructions closely to ensure the footage is evidence-worthy. Some will require staged setups to document posture and gait. Some will require observing and recording your dog in their activities of daily living.
-
Step three: Report writing
I will study your dog’s posture and gait in detail, honing in on areas that may indicate pain or discomfort. This will turn into a succint report, including marked-up photographs and annotated videos. This report can be sent to your veterinarian to provide valuable information and aid in their assessment and treatment plans.
-
Step four: Follow-up support
Dynamic Dog reports are written in veterinary terminology, so you and I will have a follow-up call to discuss my findings in plain language. I can continue to liaise between you and your dog’s care team as needed, and we can begin working on a behavior plan together. You’re well on your way to improving your dog’s quality of life!
Investment

If you’re not sure whether a Dynamic Dog assessment is right for you and your dog, or if you have questions about the process, feel free to book a free 15-minute phone call.
-
The investment for a full Dynamic Dog assessment is $350. This includes the Deep Dive consultation, data collection guidelines, report writing, and a 30-minute follow up call.
-
If you are within my service area, I can assist with taking the necessary photos and videos for this process. There are some that must be taken by you within the dog’s normal life but I can handle the trickier footage such as gait videos. Adding on this service is $150.

After you have purchased and completed your Dynamic Dog assessment, should you be interested in pursuing a training program with me, this replaces the standard consultation.
